The client has years of tax software, etc. Then, perform a Windows 10 Upgrade and apply updates. At this point, the old systems should boot to Windows 10 on new SSD's. Then move the new SSD's to the new systems, and boot off of them. Windows 10 does such a good job of re configuring itself, I thought it would handle it fine and then ultimately wind up with new systems with Windows 10 and all apps intact.

At least that was the plan until I tried booting these new SSD's in the new Optiplex's. The old systems were set to legacy mode, not UEFI. I soon discovered that the new 's don't even see anything to boot from. Odd, I thought.

A little research and I found that Dell has removed any ability to boot from a "legacy" formatted internal hard drive in the So, now I need to get creative. If it involves using a different or more SSD's, that is fine. I have plenty of SSD's. Maybe a utility or something to convert? Had it not failed, would it have created the proper files boot. OK, figured it out. Using MBR2GPT the error log showed that I needed a bit of free space at the end of the drive, so I did a shrink of a couple GB's and then had to deal with an error about a partition type mapping error.

I researched that and found the command line switch to use to get that fixed. I spoke too soon. It actually doesn't even show any partitions, although a C: drive certainly does exist and all the files are there obviously, since we booted on it! After the clone, though, the system will not boot from the NVMe as it does not see any file system on it. How's that idea working out? If you were working for me, I'd say this:. What was your original mission? It was to get the client up and running on a new PC as quickly and efficiently as possible, right?

You're not doing that. You started out with a simple idea, but ran into an issue. You concentrated on solving that issue - and the one that followed and the next one and the next one. Now, you've gotten so far into the weeds of solving problems that existed only because you created them , that you've lost sight of your objective.

In the end, you're going to wind up with a system that has a copy of a previous install along with all the wrong drivers and mis-configured internal settings that you brought over with it. It might boot, but it's going to cause you problems for the rest of its life. And every time you come back here with some weird problem, you can add that time to the total time you've spent trying to save a few hours installing software. Do yourself a favor and just do a clean install of Windows, re-install the tax software, and learn how to bring over the appropriate files.

Then, install Veeam Endpoint and get a good backup of that system ongoing. Too many variables. If your really animate about your idea try this.. Do it in stages - Make sure you have a good working backup of the original drive before doing these next steps. Then attempt to upgrade to WIN I appreciate the info, guyphillips, but as I stated in the original post, the Optiplex has removed the ability to boot from a legacy drive.

Not capable unless it is an external USB drive. I don't like that they did that, but it's how it is now. In any case, I will throw in the towel, as they say, if I cannot get it to work soon.

I'm not about wasting time, but so far it would be a big savings of time and to be honest, the Win10 updated drive boots great and Windows seems very stable. I just can't get it cloned onto the final target SSD at this point. I do it all the time. The BIOS still allows the change.

Bad info. Sorry- does not allow legacy. Try doing the win10 upgrade and gpt change on the Then clone it to an SSD then put into the This started out as a nightmare, then just went comically awry.

Definitely need to just start fresh. Absolute time sink. Again, it depends on your mission. Now, if the OP is doing this just to learn, to try a new technique, to learn about problems that might occur, or to develop an emergency procedure, that could be valuable.

That's a very different mission from a quick conversion - which I inferred from the phrasing of the original post. I keep a lot of spare servers around and use them for training. I'll often ask one of our techs "what would happen if? You can learn a lot from an episode that ends with, "Wow. Now I see why we don't do that!

The best practice is to always start fresh when you're rolling out new IT systems unless you have no choice. You did the opposite by deciding to cut corners and soon got burned by it. These Dells usually come with the superfast NVMe storage that could be used for the reinstalled tax software. Even if your questionable plan succeeded, this would still hurt the client's productivity.
